Burnham-On-Sea councillors to consider traders’ ice complaints

-

The ‘lethal’ state of Burnham-On-Sea’s icy High Street pavements during the run-up to Christmas will come under the spotlight on Monday (January 10th) when the town council considers several traders’ complaints.

A number of businesses in Burnham-On-Sea have called for answers on why the town centre was left in a treacherous condition following snowfall during the week before Christmas.

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported here how several businesses were left financially reeling when streets and pavements were turned into an ‘ice rink’ during what should have been the busiest shopping period of the year.

Phil Hemming, who runs Home Hardware on Burnham High Street, has written to the council asking for an explanation.

In his letter, he writes: “I would be grateful if you could supply me with a reason why the High Street was left unpassable due to compacted ice for the majority of potential customers for a week and yet when the Farmers Market appeared, grit was supplied within the hour.”

“It is shocking that you completely disregard the livelihoods of your council tax paying businesses in favour of street traders, who are subsidised and in a lot of cases take trade away from existing town businesses.”

“We, as a business, were called upon three times to summon an ambulance for people who had fallen as a result of the very dangerous compacted ice. This ruined at least three family’s Christmasses and these are probably only a few of the many.”

The town council is due to consider the feedback during its first full meeting of the year on Monday (January 10th).
