Over 200 people simultaneously hula hooped at the same time to set a new British record on Berrow beach today (Sunday, August 30th).
While the number of people taking part fell far short of the 2,290 needed for a world record, organisers said they were still delighted to have achieved a new British record.
Among the crowd joining in the hip-swaying fun were Jane Moreton, Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, and Ann Bown, Somerset County Council’s portfolio holder for health and well-being.
After a practise session with ‘John The Hoop Guy’, the record attempt was made just after mid-day when the participants hooped continuously for two minutes.
One of the event’s organisers, Marc Jenner, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’re delighted to have had over 200 people taking part, setting a new British record. It has been a phenomenal day.”
And the event’s main organiser, Dominique Spencer from Sedgemoor District Council, said she too was delighted with how the event had gone, although poor weather on Sunday morning was believed to have reduced the overall crowd numbers.
However, hundreds of pounds was raised at the event for BIBIC, a Bridgwater-based charity for brain-injured children. A further attempt to beat the record is already being planned for next summer.
