Highbridge residents call crisis meeting over plans for new homes

-

Worried members of Highbridge Residents Association are to hold a crisis meeting to discuss controversal plans to build thousands of new homes in the town over the next two decades.

The group is concerned at proposals in Sedgemoor District Council’s recently published Local Development Framework which, the group claims, suggest over 4,000 homes will be built in Highbridge over the next 16 years.

Tina Gray, Chairman of the residents’ association, told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Tuesday (October 19th): “We’re very worried that little thought has been given to how these proposals for thousands of new homes will affect Highbridge.

“There appear to be no new community facilities, such as doctors, shops, schools or play areas, being built at the same time.”

“Schools in the town are already at breaking point with places severely limited. We also need new jobs to be created alongside any extra houses.”

“They are horrendous proposals for the town. Highbridge seems to have become the dumping ground for new housing in recent years.”

The crisis meeting is to be held on Friday 12th November at 7pm in Morland Commnunity Hall. It will be open to all Highbridge residents.

The Submission Core Strategy is a key component of the Local Development Framework that sets out the policies which will guide development in our area up until 2026.

The strategy outline plans to deliver town centre improvements, additional brownfield growth, and enhanced employment opportunities for Burnham and Highbridge.

It is also proposes that at least 9,100 new jobs and 10,100 new homes should be created across Sedgemoor.

The Draft Core Strategy is available for comment until 22nd November and more details of how to comment can be found at www.sedgemoor.gov.uk/ldf.
