Burnham-On-Sea’s BARB rescue hovercraft was called to Weston-super-Mare by Coastguards on Sunday afternoon (May 28th) amid concern for a group of walkers.
The walkers were spotted a mile from the shore at low tide, as pictured here. BARB’s volunteers were called out with the Spirit of Lelaina 2 hovercraft alongside Weston Coastguards.
A spokesman said: “BARB’s hovercraft and volunteers were called to Weston-super-Mare by Coastguards at 2.08pm following concern for the welfare of a group of walkers in beach mud.”
“The group had waded out across the mudflats at low tide to try and reach the sea. They were over a mile from the shore, prompting concerns that they were in difficulty.”
“BARB’s Spirit of Lelaina 2 hovercraft was taken by road to Weston beach. Fortunately, the people managed to get back to the beach of their own accord and no further action was required.”
“BARB’s volunteers are on-call 24 hours a day to help people in difficulty along our coastline. Always call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if you have concerns about anyone and BARB will be paged if required.”
