Burnham-On-Sea’s War Memorial Hospital is to get a major refurbishment over the coming year, thanks to £300,000 of funding from the hospital’s League of Friends.
NHS Somerset, formerly Somerset Primary Care Trust, is also providing further investment to finance the upgrade of the 22 bed hospital.
The improvements will include a revamp of the wards, pictured right, to provide more single and double rooms with en-suite facilities.
There will also be brand new kitchen facilities, improved security, and a new-look foyer leading to the minor injuries unit, ophthalmic suite and physiotherapy waiting area.
NHS Somerset’s Chief Executive, Ian Tipney, said in a statement on Friday: “We are delighted to be able to work in partnership with the League of Friends for Burnham Hospital.”
“This much-loved and appreciated NHS facility will be transformed due to the kind generosity of the hospital ‘Friends’ and local people. NHS Somerset will be contributing the extra investment necessary to deliver a thorough modernisation of the hospital.”
“This investment will upgrade the entire hospital and ensure it is prepared to meet the future health demands of a modern NHS. We hope to see building work start later this year.”
Tony Deahl, Chairman of Burnham War Memorial Hospital’s League of Friends, added: “We are delighted to be able to support such a major project. We have been working closely with NHS Somerset in the development of the plans and look forward to them being realised in the near future.”
The start of the project was formally announced to hospital supporters at their annual party at Burnham’s Lakeside Holiday Park on Saturday 14th March.
