Asbestos has been removed from the roof of Burnham-On-Sea’s hospital during a major refurbishment of the property.
The potentially hazardous material has been safely taken away during work to improve energy efficiency at Burnham-On-Sea War Memorial Hospital in Love Lane.
Paul Courtney from Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Asbestos sheeting on the roof of the hospital has being carefully removed and replaced with energy efficient material.”
“This work has been more extensive and may have taken longer than anticipated due to the need for the safe disposal of the asbestos.”
He added: “The hospital refurbishment should deliver more energy efficiency and a reduction in heating bills.”
The extensive work, which has cost tens of thousands of pounds, has also seen new sky-lights added to the roof and new cladding on the hospital’s outer walls, improving the appearance.
A number of windows have also been replaced with aluminium double glazed windows, reducing drafts, and the hospital’s boiler has been replaced with a new energy efficient ‘condenser boiler’.
Furthermore, the hospital’s lighting systems have been upgraded and are now using low energy bulbs and the hospital’s closed-circuit television system has also been upgraded to provide better security.
