Burnham’s annual Horticultural Show was a blooming success!
Hundreds of gardeners, cooks, handicraft hobbyists and photographers took part in the 38th annual Burnham Horticultural Show this week.
The two-day event, which is organised by Burnham-On-Sea & District Horticultural Society, was held on August 13th and 14th at Sanders Garden World.
The overall standard of entries was high again which made the judges’ jobs of picking winners a tough one.
Burnham vegetable grower Bert Stone (pictured right) was was among the top winners and was delighted to win the sought-after Barclay Cup for his prize-winning onions.
He said: “I’ve being entering the onion classes for four years and usually do well but this is the first time I have actually won the trophy, so I’m very pleased.”
Entries in this year’s show covered a wide range of areas including floral art, handicrafts, photography, pot plants, flowers, wines, fruit and vegetables.
David Bryant, the Annual Show Secretary, from Burnham-On-Sea, won 12 first prizes for his selection of vegetables and flowers, including first prize for his display of five different types of vegetables. He is pictured right with Garden centre Managing Director Peter Burks.
Among the other trophy winners was D Pierce for the most points in the photography classes, Sarah White for the most points in the handicraft and domestic classes, and David Bryant for the most prize money in the horticultural classes.
The show’s treasurer, Les Wallis, said: “We’ve had a steady stream of people to see the show during the two days and have had a good number of entries so it’s been a great success.”
Garden centre Managing Director, Peter Burks, added: “We’re delighted to have had this prestigious horticultural, cooking and craft-based event on site again this year.
“It’s provided both entertainment and ideas for our customers and will hopefully have encouraged some people to get into gardening and growing for the first time. We’re delighted to help community events like this in any way we can.”
