The owner of this 4×4 was today (Tuesday August 4th) counting the cost of driving out onto Brean’s notorious mudflats after getting stuck and losing his vehicle to the incoming tide.
The Honda could not be saved before being swamped by sea water almost a quarter of a mile from the beach.
The owner, who is holiday from Stourport-On-Severn, had apparently driven the high-performance vehicle onto the mudflats to try and reach the sea to do some afternoon fishing.
Brean beach warden Pete Williams told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Remarkably, the owner had driven out across the mudflats with the intention of going fishing.”
“Not surprisingly, he quickly got stuck when his wheels sank into the deep mud and soft sand.”
“The vehicle was so stuck that there was not even any point in calling for the help of rescue charity BARB.”
“The owner was very distraught and wasn’t looking forward to telling his wife what had happened!”
This week’s incident follows several similar vehicle strandings along the Burnham-On-Sea coastline during the first half of this year.
In July, a Land Rover was rescued from the mud by a team of rescuers from BARB. In May, a huge rescue attempt failed to save a van from the incoming tide on Burnham beach.
