A crewmember from Burnham-On-Sea’s adopted wartime destroyer was welcomed by a group of past Mayors when he visited the town on Sunday (August 4th).
Ted Huffey, 91, who served on the destroyer HMS Burnham between 1943 and 1945, was welcomed by councillor Neville Jones, a former Chairman of the HMS Burnham Association.
“We always give a very warm welcome to crewmembers of Burnham’s adopted warship whenever they visit to thank them for their efforts during the war,” Cllr Jones told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
The ship played a vital role from 1940 to 1944, escorting war convoys across the Atlantic.
In 1942, HMS Burnham was fomerly adopted by Burnham-On-Sea, and in 1944 a contingent of the ship’s company visited the town.
Mr Huffey was also welcomed at the weekend by former Mayors Peter Burridge-Clayton, Louise Parkin, Dennis Davey and current Deputy Mayor Pauline Pollard.
Mr Huffey was shown the Trafalgar Day plaque unveiled at Marine Cove in 2005 and the seafront HMS Burnham plaque unveiled in 2004.
“It’s great to see HMS Burnham’s role and links with the town still being remembered all these years later,” Ted told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “I love to visit Burnham – I always get such a very warm welcome here.”
