British Energy, the owner and operator of Hinkley Point B nuclear power station near Burnham-On-Sea, is to hold a public meeting later this month to discuss potential plans for a new nuclear power plant.
The meeting on April 23rd will allow local residents to discuss the company’s work on preparing for a new nuclear power station, plus the process of selecting sites, and to hear more about the Government’s response to the public consultation held last year.
The government recently outlined its energy plans for the UK when it stated that nuclear power would continue to make a contribution to the security of electricity supply and help combat climate change.
“British Energy aims to be at the heart of any new nuclear build and has already started assessment work on a number of UK sites, including Hinkley Point. This is in order to develop knowledge of the sites and the environmental and economic impact of new nuclear build in these areas,” a spokesman for the company said this week.
“Although there is still much work to be done before decisions on siting and technology are made, British Energy is keen to keep people informed on the decision making process and to hear views on the impact this may have on the area.”
British Energy will give a presentation on the possibility for a new build at Hinkley. It has also invited a representative from BERR, the Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, to explain what the Government has decided on new nuclear power in the UK and the next steps in this process.
The meeting will be held at the Centre for Land-based Study in Cannington on Wednesday 23rd April 2008 from 6.30pm-8.30pm. Those wanting to attend should register in advance by calling 01278 654514. Applications will be accepted on a first come basis, as there is a room limit.
