Investigation begins after ‘small blaze’ at Hinkley Point power station

-

An investigation is underway to establish the cause of a fire at Hinkley Point nuclear power station near Burnham-On-Sea on Wednesday (May 16th).

Firefighters were called to Hinkley Point B by owners EDF Energy on Wednesday morning.

EDF said a “small fire” had broken out in some lagging in the gas turbine house at 11:55am.

A spokesman said the station’s fire response team had been mobilised, along with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

The spokesman said the fire was extinguished within a few minutes before the fire service arrived.

“There were no injuries to any personnel,” said an EDF spokesman. “There has been no impact on operational activity at the power station, which continues to safely generate electricity.”

He added that an investigation had begun to identify the cause of the fire.
