EDF boss ‘hopeful’ of making decision on Hinkley Point C this year

-

The boss of energy giant EDF has this week said he is “hopeful” that the company can take an investment decision on Hinkley Point C later this year.

EDF expects to take a final decision on the £16billion nuclear power plant near Burnham-On-Sea after the summer, its Chief Executive said on Wednesday.

“We are fairly hopeful we will be able to take what is called a final investment decision on this project for two EPR reactors after the summer pause,” CEO Jean-Bernard Levy told politicians in France’s lower house of parliament.

Austria launched legal action earlier this month against the European Commission over its backing of British plans for the development. Greenpeace Energy and nine German and Austrian utilities have also made a formal challenge over the plan.

It is based on alleged “legal and procedural errors” when state aid was approved for the power plant at Hinkley Point by the European Commission.

Last October, the European Commission gave the go-ahead to the project after the UK government reduced the state subsidy by more than £1bn.
