Burnham-On-Sea’s Hillview Carnival Club is a hive of activity this week as its team work around the clock to get their cart, called Luck Of The Irish, finished in time for the start of the carnival season this weekend.
Burnham-On-Sea.com was invited to take a look behind the scenes this week as the club completes their Irish-themed cart.
Decorated with more than 5,000 light bulbs, the 80ft-long cart has cost the club more than £10,000 to build.
It will be seen by hundreds of thousands of people at carnivals across Somerset, starting in Bridgwater this Saturday (November 2nd) and then Burnham on Monday evening (November 4th).
Hillview’s Chairman, Mark Bishop, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This year’s cart is decorated with a green Irish theme featuring leprachauns, shamrocks, rainbows and pots of gold – it’s great fun.”
“The name of the cart, Luck Of The Irish, is very suitable this year because it’s been a tough year for us. It did look at one point as though we wouldn’t be entering after we lost several volunteers to other clubs, but we’ve got a great team and there’s still a strong team spirit running here and our cart is on track to be ready in time.”
“We have had great backing from the parents of our child members and our cart captain, James Hallam, has been fantastic. We are also so fortunate to have strong support from the Nicholson family who help around the year.”
Mark added: “We’re also very grateful for the support of Woodberry Brothers in Highbridge who have allowed us to build this cart on their premises and to the Bristol Bridge Inn for their continuing support.”
Hillview’s team of volunteers are this week working around the clock screwing in light bulbs and painting the final sections of the cart as the final adjustments are made.
