Highbridge’s King Alfred School Academy pupils hold WW1 remembrance ceremony

-

Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge students at King Alfred Somerset Academy have held an Act of Remembrance for those lost in the war.

The ceremony was held on Friday November 9th at their Silent Soldier Memorial, which was bought by 40 students and staff following their recent trip to the battlefields of the First World War during half term.

A wreath made from paper poppies was laid by students and Head of History Martyn Ellis. It was packed with messages from students, staff and member of the wider community.

The pupils also held photos of the local fallen soldiers in their memory.

During the recent battlefields trip, the students walked in the footsteps of the soldiers of 1914-18 at Ypres, Vimy Ridge and on the Somme, including preserved trenches.

One of the most poignant moments was when four students took part in the wreath laying at the commemoration ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres.

Students raised well over £100 which has been donated to the British Legion Poppy Appeal.

As a result, a silent soldier silhouette was delivered to school this week ready to be installed as a permanent reminder of the sacrifice made by the soldiers of the Great War, Second World War and all the conflicts since.

Mr Ellis told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The students were truly moved by their experience at the battlefields and felt they wanted to make a contribution to the Poppy Appeal.”

“This is a fantastic way for the school to annually and proudly remember the fallen.”
