Highbridge to get its own radio station during June

-

Local organisation Somerset Film has applied to OFCOM, the UK’s radio regulator, for a temporary licence to broadcast across the town for two days on June 12th and 13th.

Funded by the Big Lottery and te ‘Family Connections’ community initiative, the station will enable families in and around Highbridge to go ‘on the air’.

Co-ordinator Kirsty Bucknell, pictured below, told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Friday: “We’ve been running activities on all kinds of subjects, from animation to Internet safety, over the last couple of months in the area.”

“A number of families have expressed an interest in radio and they thought other families would enjoy the chance to learn more about it and have fun doing it.”

“It seemed an exciting and appropriate thing to help make happen.”

She added that it is intended that the station will be run by families and for families. To participate, youngsters must always be accompanied by a parent, grandparent or carer, but no previous experience is required.

There will be lots of roles on and off the microphone and free training will be provided.

Participants will be able to make and present programmes, news items, interviews and features, from gardening tips to stories of Highbridge’s history.

They can also be recorded in advance so there’s no need to worry about nerves or being available for the broadcast dates.

Somerset Film is also interested in hearing from local bands that want to air their material. To get involved, contact Kirsty Bucknell by email here.
