The organiser of an outdoor music event due to be held in Highbridge on Sunday (August 7th) has apologised to residents after it was cancelled due to high winds.
Several residents were left diappointed after arriving at the event, called Music at The Rec, at Southwell House gardens, to find it had been cancelled.
A line-up of local acts was due to perform – including Rustique, pictured above, plus Sam Patten, Nick and Chris, the Polden Mountain Boys, plus Ben and Toby.
Organiser Mike Murphy, Chairman of organising group CADS (Burnham and Highbridge Cultural Arts and Development Society), told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I would like to express my sincere apologies and personal disappointment at this cancellation after so much work in confirming bands, vendors and stalls.”
“The weather forecasts of the last week hardened into a strengthening west wind gusting up to 31mph plus and lasting all day.”
“I took the decision to cancel in good faith because of a real risk the wind could send our gazebos flying into the crowd. They were sent tumbling at a previous event at Cassis Close with luckily only wrecked equipment.”
“We used our phones to contact all concerned. I posted event cancellation notices. This is only the second cancellation in 19 years and I am deeply sorry it happened at our first event at Southwell House Gardens.”
“I stand by my decision – health and safety is number one for us. I do apologise to any who missed our communications or those who came to the event and were disappointed or if our communication was not as effective as it could be.”
“My apologies again and I share your disappointment as did all the bands and players who were ready to entertain.”
