A new online history of Highbridge, supported by funding from the National Lottery, has been launched this week.
Called Capture Highbridge, the site builds upon the work of the Highbridge History Project and its contributors.
Together they created an exhibition in 2002 and a book, which was published in 2004.
Donations from members of the public covered the original printing costs of the book and sales of additional copies have raised funds for groups and facilities in Highbridge.
The book is now out of print, although copies remain in the local library.
The recently installed Highbridge History Panels in the town have renewed people’s interest in their local heritage and, after discussions with Sue Quatermass, Community Development Worker, the Highbridge History Project agreed to make the information in the book available online.
Using the book as the foundation for the site, Capture Highbridge co-ordinators Somerset Film hope that the archive will continue to grow by enabling individuals to adding photos, memories and updating information capturing the town and their lives. The site can be accessed here.
