More than 200 people filled Highbridge Community Hall on Saturday evening (October 9th) for the first ever Highbridge In Bloom awards presentation.
Dozens of certificates and trophies were handed out by Mayor and Mayoress Michael and Maria Clarke, Sedgemoor District Council Chairman Jane Moreton and Highbridge County Councillor John Woodman.
Britain In Bloom judges Tony Moore and John Bawden were also on hand to join in the celebrations after Highbridge won a sought-after Silver Gilt award in the overall regional competition.
A number of youngsters received awards. In the early years category, winners were Kasey Pengelly, Leanon Holbrook and Emily Rose Whaley. Year 1 winners were Joshua kirk, Sienna Field and Alex Ellis. Year 2 winners were Libby Gander, Emily Coles and beth Patterson. Year 4 winners were Aden Criddle, Natalie Badby and Jordan Bertram. Year 5 winners were Ethan Williams, Sophie Cadwallender and Olivia Cox.
In the Class A ‘group of houses’ competition, prizes went to Mr and Mrs D Emery, Mr D Whiteman, Miss M Lock, Len Harvey and Jason Adams.
In the Class B hanging baskets category, awards went to Mrs P Benton, Mr T Searle and M Hand. In class C for small front gardens, the winners were Mrs A Cross, P Benton and J Hills. And in Class D the winners for large front gardens were T Searle, D Whiteman and Mr D Emery.
Commercial premises awards were won by Salt Express, Baytree Upholstery and Mr A Holley. Separate ‘best overall’ commercial premises awards were also won by Salt Express and Baytree Upholstery. In the allotments competition, the winners were Mrs Wllkinson, S Flory and Mr Lee, who received vouchers from Sanders Garden World.
Highbridge’s Dreamscheme also won several awards, including a trophy in the Britain In Bloom youth awards and the Mayor’s trophy for achievement.
Group awards were also handed to Friends Of Apex Park, Churchfield School and General Higgins House.
Mayor Michael Clarke praised all those who had taken part, saying: “You are all winners – it gives me great pleasure to see such a huge community effort in Highbridge. Many thanks to you all.”
Highbridge In Bloom’s Joyce Curtis and Bill Fisher both thanked all those residents who had taken part and said they were looking forward to a further successful year in 2011.
