Members of Highbridge Social Club are this week celebrating a council decision to provide it with financial help to keep it running.
As we reported last month, members of Highbridge Social Club feared for the club’s future due to financial difficulties.
However, Sedgemoor District Council has approved the club’s application for hardship relief and it is to receive a reduction in the business rates it has to pay, safeguarding its future.
Club Chairman John Akers told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were paying nearly £10,000 a year and the council has agreed to reduce this by 50%.”
“It’s very good news for the club and we are very grateful for the council’s support.”
“We are now able to work on the club’s future plans, including this year’s centenary plans. We are keen to get the message out that we will not be closing and are now looking for new darts and skittles teams to join along with new members.”
The club, located in Church Street, is home to several such teams, and has a range of facilities, including function rooms available for hire.
In July, the club will be celebrating its 100th year when a number of activities are planned – more details will follow on Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Membership of the club is open to men and women. For more details, ring 01278 782446.
