This was the scene on Burnham-On-Sea High Street on Wednesday afternoon (March 7th) after thick smoke was spotted pouring out of a doorway.
Two fire engines from Burnham were quickly on the scene after the thick black smoke was seen emerging from the entrance to Woolley Surveyors, next to Gary Berrymans estate agents, at around 4.30pm.
High Street resident Stavros Partakis, who took these photos, said: “I was one of the first people at the scene and saw a lot of smoke coming out of the building. Fortunately, the fire crews arrived quickly and were followed a short time afterwards by the police. It was all over in a few minutes.”
Burnham-On-Sea Fire Officer Ian Hazelton told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There was a lot of smoke, but no flames, around the doorway, which we quickly cleared.”
He added: “Entry was gained using a key so we did not have to force our way in. The cause of the incident is now under investigation.”
Burnham fire crews later confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com that the incident had been caused by a smoke bomb being posted through the letterbox of the firm.
