Wildlife charity issues hedgehog warning to Burnham gardeners

-

East Huntspill’s Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre has this week issued a warning to gardeners in the Burnham-On-Sea area to watch out for hedgehogs when strimming long grass or clearing out their potting sheds.

Britain’s favourite mammal often nests in overgrown garden areas or amid the clutter in sun-warmed sheds at this time of year without realising the potential danger to themselves and their young.

Secret World founder Pauline Kidner told Burnham-On-Sea.com it is not uncommon for the charity to receive hedgehogs injured by strimmers or babies abandoned after shed clear outs. “We are simply reminding people to remember these much loved creatures when working in their gardens,” she said.

The warning comes as Secret World prepares to give wildlife lovers an opportunity to learn all about hedgehogs and their habitats at its special Hedgehog and Tortoise Weekend at its centre on July 30th and 31st. Doors will open from 10am-4pm. Entry will be free, however donations will be welcome.

Special guests will include Debbie and Harry, Debbie a rare blond and blue eyed young hedgehog and Harry her brown soulmate found abandoned in a garden, and Eric the giant Sulcata tortoise.
