Burnham-On-Sea’s MP backs new health campaign launch in town

-

Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge’s MP has giving his backing to a new local health campaign to encourage more people to ‘get moving’ and beat obesity.

Highbridge’s King Alfred Sports Centre is among nineteen 1610-owned leisure centres across Somerset, Devon and Dorset that are taking part in the ‘Technogym Let’s Move for a better world’ campaign from March 13th-31st.

MP James Heappey has toured the centre this week to try out the equipment and said: “I was impressed by what I saw – these are superb facilities that are an asset to Burnham and Highbridge.”

The aim of the campaign is to encourage as many people as possible to get moving – and the sports centres are competing to record the most moves of its members.

1610 has the top three centres with the most people signed up to get moving. Dorchester has the most people signed up for the challenge, followed by Trinity Sports & Leisure in Bridgwater, and in third place is King Alfred Sports Centre in Highbridge.

1610 is hoping to register 10 million moves across its centres during the campaign which will mean it may also be able to donate free Technogym gym equipment to some local schools and for teachers to receive free fitness training.

1610 is also donating free spot prizes such as gym membership, t–shirts, towels and water bottles. The firm is also taking the campaign across the South West to local schools, businesses and residential homes to ensure that everyone from a toddler to a 90 year old can take up an active lifestyle.

It is not just at 1610 centres where the Let’s Move campaign will be taking place but a wide variety of South West based venues to get local communities moving;

On Tuesday, Burnham Rugby club will join King Alfred Sports Centre to get moving, and on Monday March 27th Burnham Hockey Club will head to the centre.
