Not again! Accident blackspot claims FIFTH car in a fortnight

A FIFTH crash in a fortnight took place at an accident blackspot near Burnham-On-Sea yesterday (Thursday, August 27th), leading to renewed calls for urgent safety improvements.

The driver of this vehicle went off the road and into a ditch while driving along Harp Road between the villages of Mark and Brent Knoll following more rain on Thursday – just yards from where four other motorists have lost control in the past fortnight.

There were no serious injuries, but this latest crash raises renewed safety questions about the road.

District councillor Bob Filmer, who represents the area, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Many people are simply driving too fast along this road, but we do need to find some way to improve the safety there.”

“For visitors who are unfamiliar with this route it looks like a straight road and they often speed up, when in fact there are some nasty sharp bends lurking along there.”

“This last two weeks really shows that something needs to be done. I would support looking at whether a 30mph speed limit could be introduced, providing it can be enforced, and I think it’s worth taking a fresh look at the surface of the road for greasing after heavy rainfall.”

Monday’s crash in Harp Road, pictured above, was the fourth at the spot. A vehicle completely overturned, leaving the occupants shocked.

The third crash on Sunday August 23rd saw a Renault got off the road into a ditch just yards away, pictured above. While there were no reported injuries, the incident again raised safety questions.

The first and second crashes, reported here, saw fire crews from Burnham and Glastonbury sent to Harp Road on August 19th after a car left the road and ended upside down in a water-filled ditch with two people trapped inside, who received treatment from the ambulance service. A few days earlier, another car had also come off Harp Road nearby, as pictured above.
