Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge’s Mayor has cut a ribbon to formally open a new boxing club in the town.
Bobby Jones, a current TFC English and Southern Area title holder, has been running Hardknox boxing gym in Weston for the past few years alongside his fellow coach Harry Payne.
Bobby has been hiring a gym in Weston on an hourly basis but due to popular demand he has needed to seek out a new full-time premises.
Bobby and his wife, Josie, host the club’s home shows at the Oaktree Arena and Mayor Bill Hancock, who owns the arena, said he could provide a unit to use as a permanent home for the club.
Bobby said: “After a lot of building work, we now have the perfect place to coach and train our boxers!”
“We are able to offer children’s, women’s, 40+ and various other classes which is something we’ve wanted to be able to do for a long time.”
“We held an open day on Saturday and had a phenomenal response from the local community with well over 100 people turning up to check out the new gym.”
“It’s been such an exciting time for everyone at The School of Hardknox. There is such a high energy throughout the club, and everyone is buzzing!
It’s all come together just in time for the club’s up and coming home show on Saturday 20th October. Tickets are available on the door at The Oaktree Arena, with doors opening at 6.30pm.
Mayor Bill Hancock told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Bobby has been organising boxing events here at the Oaktree for several years, so when he asked whether there might be a unit available for them to have a permanent base for the club we were happy to help.”
“A former farm building has been quickly transformed into a gym fully equipped with modern equipment. I congratulate Bobby and Josie on all their work and wish them every success for the furture.”
