Customers at The Reed’s Arms in Burnham were in for a fright on Saturday (October 28th) when fun-loving staff at the seafront pub celebrated a Halloween beer festival.
Staff pulled on witches outfits and masks as the 12-day ‘Full Moon’ beer festival got underway in hundreds of JD Wetherspoon pubs across the country.
“Beers being served up include Marston’s Wicked Witch, Moorhouse’s Broomstick, Wychwood’s Hobgoblin, Highgate’s Lone Wolf and York Centurion’s Ghost Ale,” said Wetherspoon’s spokesmam Nathan Wall.
“The festival gives people an opportunity to enjoy a wide range of wonderful beers from across the UK, not usually available in their respective towns.”
Meanwhile, increased interest in Halloween merchandise – from broomsticks and pumpkins to toy spiders – has given Burnham-On-Sea traders a boost in recent days.
Florists, hairdressers, fruitsellers, charity shops and even opticians along the High Street have decorated their windows for Halloween.
Chris Julian of Julian’s Gift Shop in the High Street told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Interest in Halloween certainly seems to be up on last year – we’ve been selling a good number of masks, hats and broomsticks during the last few days. Halloween seems to have taken off in recent years.”
Meanwhile, Burnham Police are reminding people how they can stay safe on October 31st – whether they are children going ‘trick or treating’ or adults going to Halloween parties.
Assistant Chief Constable Steve Mortimore said: “For young people the most important thing is not to go out alone. Children should always go trick or treating with an adult or if they are going with a group of friends, they should always tell their parents where they are going.”
“You should also make sure you stick to well lit areas if possible and ensure you can be seen by motorists if you have to cross roads. We want everyone to have a fun Halloween, but more importantly, a safe one.”
