Residents of Burnham-On-Sea’s The Grove, Marlborough Court and Gardenhurst threw a Jubilee Street party on Monday (June 4th) which is thought to have been the biggest in Somerset.
More than 200 neighbours, friends and family gathered in glorious sunshine for an afternoon of relaxation, party games and fireworks.
The intergenerational activities included a treasure hunt around the streets, a crown colouring competition and a royal-themed quiz.
The now annual ‘Three Streets Cake Bake’ competition, judged by five times national confectioner champion Keith Fisher, was won by Michaela from Marlborough Court and the new cup cake class was won by a very surprised and pleased Amanada from The Grove.
The afternoon’s activities included an Odd Houses versus Even Houses sporting challenge, with rounds being held for children and adults.
Traditional favourites such as a three-legged race and egg and spoon race were complimented by welly wanging and space hopper relays.
The competition came down to the last event, The Tug of War. The defending champions, Evens, took the first heat and had all to play for in the second heat, which was an epic battle with a titanic effort from everyone!
Team captains were frantically preparing their teams beforehand and spirits were running high.
Teams of around 50 on each side battled it out for over a minute with Evens anchorman Nigel Milner horizontal at one point in his efforts to hold back the cried of “heave!” from the Odds. In the end, an exhausted Odds were pulled over the Evens line.
The residents were pleased to welcome Mayor Ken Smout during the afternoon who presented the organising team with a certificate of recognition for their community-spirited efforts. The evening’s entertainment was alfresco karaoke and a spectacular firework display. Elisya Parker and Austin Spinks were crowned the Three Streets King and Queen for 2012.
Local resident Mandi Stewart said: “Celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee under blue skies, surrounded by my friends, family and neighbours, was a glorious combination. Long may our street parties and her reign continue.”
