Green flags award for Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge parks

-

Parks in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge are set to be presented with coveted environmental awards this week.

The national Green Flag Award scheme has unveiled this year’s award winners and both Marine Cove and Apex Paek are once again amongst the very best in the UK.

The Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, alongside volunteers and Sedgemoor staff, will raise the new 2016 Green flag at Marine Cove and Apex Park this Wednesday (27th July).

Marine Cove Gardens has received the Green Flag Award for the fifth year running while Apex Park in Highbridge is receiving it for the tenth year in a row.

A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained, holds regular events, is appropriately marketed and has excellent facilities.

Councillor Ian Dyer, Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, added: “It is with thanks to Sedgemoor’s Parks, Clean Surroundings and Dog Warden staff, as well as the incredible support from the Friends of Marine Cove Gardens and Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group, that both parks are in tip-top condition for their wide range of visitors.”

“Sedgemoor District Council is very proud to have once again been recognised in two separate locations for Green Flag awards. Well done to all involved.”

The award, now celebrating its 20th year, recognises and rewards the UK’s best parks and green spaces across the country.

The Green Flag Awards are judged by an army of more than 700 green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.

Nationally, 1,686 parks and green spaces have received a prestigious Green Flag Award in 2016.
