Councillors in Burnham-On-Sea have this week tried to reassure residents that 60 acres of green land which is up for sale on the outskirts of the town is not set to be turned into new homes any time soon.
It comes despite several sale boards appearing in the fields along Queens Drive promoting the fields as ‘strategic land with development potential’, as first reported here.
Cllr Chris Williams told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Monday: “I can assure residents that none of this land is anticipated to appear on Sedgemoor’s current plans for housing up until until the year 2026.”
“I also understand that it will not be one of the areas to be considered in the next eight-week consultation period starting on 22nd November for 400 houses in the joint parish of Burnham and Highbridge.”
Sedgemoor District Council is expected to decide on Wednesday that land next to Brue Farm in Highbridge is the most appropriate site for the 400 homes.
Cllr Neville Jones added: “The land that has just come on the market for development next to Queens Drive is part of the ‘green wedge’ which I have fought for for years.”
“Furthermore, that land is within Burnham Without and therefore any 106 development funding generated from it will not come to Burnham.”
“I’ve played a big part over the past 15 years in enhancing the entrance to the town and wouldn’t wish to see this diminished – I have no wish to see this land built on. There are plenty of other areas in Burnham which could be built on.”
