Burnham-On-Sea wildlife carers give lost little grebe a new home

-

A baby grebe found wandering alone has been given a second chance by Burnham-On-Sea wildlife rescuers.

After the bird was found wandering around Shepton Mallet, Secret World Wildlife Rescue decided to bring it to its centre in East Huntspill near Burnham-On-Sea for further assessment.

Animal carers at the charity found the bird had no injuries, but it had clearly lost all contact with its parents. Grebes are small to medium-sized birds with lobed toes. They are excellent swimmers and divers and are never usually far from water.

Secret World founder Pauline Kidner said: “As the baby bird was so far from the water and without its parents to look after it, we couldn’t release it back to where it was found.”

“It’ll now be sent to RSPCA West Hatch to be with other birds in its specialist water enclosures. Once it’s bigger and able to fend for itself, it will eventually be released back into the wild. We’ve given this bird a second chance to live a happy and fulfilled life!”
