Oops! Burnham’s beach mud halts Round Britain cycle event

-

The sticky nature of Burnham-On-Sea’s soft sand and mud caught out this unlucky cyclist during the latest stage of a Round Britain challenge on Saturday morning (August 28th).

Almost 30 cyclists sped their way along the town’s beach from Berrow to Burnham during the Somerset leg of The Great Tour.

But the event came to a standstill for several minutes when one of the cyclists, triathlete Donna Elliott, came off her bike after it got stuck near Burnham’s Pier.

Donna, pictured right, was unhurt and told Burnham-On-Sea.com on the town’s jetty: “My bike came to a stop in the mud, sending me over the handlebars. Fortunately, I was fine – it just shakes you up a bit.”

Another cyclist, Graeme Knott, added: “The sand on the beach has shifted since the organisers did a check of the best route earlier in the year. We had to choose our route carefully today to avoid the soft areas.”

Participants in the 64-day Great Tour started the 6,600km event on July 3rd. On their latest leg on Saturday, they rode 123km from Congresbury to Selworthy and passed through Berrow, Burnham and Highbridge.

They are on track to reach the finishing line in Seaton on September 4th. Full details about the event are online here.
