An angry Burnham-On-Sea resident has hit out at Sedgemoor District Council for its ‘poor standard’ of cutting grass on public verges around the town.
Sylvia Young, pictured, told councillors at their latest meeting that too few cuts are being undertaken and that grass cuttings are often not being collected from pavements after the work, causing drains and gutters to be blocked during wet weather.
Town Clerk Denise Emery says Sedgemoor District Council’s Clean Surroundings team carry out the cutting on behalf of the County Council’s Highways department.
“The number of cuts has not changed this year or last although the year before saw a 20 per cent reduction,” she added.
“As for why the grass is not picked up, this is down to cost and logistics – obviously, time and personnel to pick up the grass but also the cost of supplying another van to remove the bags or piles of cut grass and take it to the recycling centre for composting.”
“Any additional cost to carry out this work would have to be added to the rates and all councils have to decide the priorities in regard to the level of services they can give.”
