Three youngsters have been interviewed by police after graffiti was scrawled on play equipment at a new £350,000 park in Burnham-On-Sea that opened just two months ago.
As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com here last week, many of the benches and play equipment at the Rosewood Green public park have been been scrawled with names and messages – some of them offensive – using permanent pens.
The park’s owner, Sedgemoor District Council, and residents have expressed dismay at the damage.
Police officers in Burnham have now dealt with three young people in relation to the criminal damage.
“The teenagers were dealt with after their parents contacted the police to inform them what their children had done,” said PS Mike Tripp.
“The three children aged 11, 12 and 15 were interviewed by police and admitted using marker pens to deface play equipment and benches in the recently opened play park.”
“In agreement with Sedgemoor District Council the children have now been handed a Community Justice Resolution.”
“These Resolutions take into account previous behaviour, the wishes of the harmed party and proportionate tasks or agreements for the children to carry out.”
“The police work with the offenders, the parents and the victims to ensure that theses resolutions are carried out and that the harmed person or organisation is adequately compensated.”
“These are normal teenagers, who have made a mistake, without thinking of the ramifications, and now hugely regret their actions.”
“They are now well aware of the wider impact that they have had on the community. Their supportive parents who were extremely disappointed by the actions of their children have worked closely with the police and the council to right this wrong.”
