20 golf teams hit the greens for annual Brean charity tournament

-

Over 20 teams took part in the annual Charity Pro-Am Golf Tournament at Brean Golf Club on Tuesday (June 4th).

Local teams did well in this year’s event by managing scoop the top awards in the competition, which was held to raise money for the Injured Jockeys Fund.

The Jones Bros team tasted success for the third time as they won the 2013 event with a score of 81 points.

Brothers Eric and David, along with David’s son’s Paul and Steve, seem to have found the perfect combination for this competition as they always feature around the leading places, if not leading the way.

In a change to the usual format a ‘shotgun start’ was deployed so the 23 teams spread to all parts of the course at Brean Leisure Park to enjoy an afternoon in glorious sunshine.

Robin Williams and his team of greenstaff again excelled themselves, producing a superb course with greens that were rolling very truely and at a good pace.

The sunshine was very pleasant but the stiff breeze blowing off the land made scoring much trickier than it sometimes can be. This was backed up by the Jones Bros team, who were the only ones to score over 80 points on the day. 78 was to prove a popular score as no less than five teams handed in that number.

Brean Professional Andrew March might rue the recent lessons he has given to the Jones family as it may have prevented his team from winning!

He led the Brean Ladies team to second spot as they had the best back nine score of those on 78. This was helped greatly by a stunning birdie at the 18th hole by Ladies Captain Sheila Rouse which netted the team some crucial points.

Jenny Vaughan and Annie Williams completed the quartet which dovetailed nicely after a slow start to their round. The team also scored the only two of the day as March converted his putt at the par 3 2nd hole to scoop the sizeable pot!

Third place was the Butterworth Jones & Co 4 team again on 78 points. Butterworth Jones are always great long standing supporters of the event and Chris John, Mark Maxwell, Ryan Bartlett and Tony Simes received their prizes from Robert John from the firm. Next in line for the 78’s were the Heineken 2 team. Joining entertainer Sammy Small were Brean members Tony Groves, John Mardon and Alan Marshall.

The final prizewinners were the Brean Golf Club team led by Club Captain Brian Read. Taking their places in this team, having qualified via an earlier club competition, were Roger Vaughan, Pete Dunn and Kevin Davies. The unlucky four to miss out were ‘Tom’s Boys’ made up of Steve Bateman, Charlie Kelly, Chris Fairchild and Steve Mason.

“All in all a good day was had by all who took part and thanks go to the House family for hosting and to Deidre Wheadon for organising the ever popular event which is sure to be eagerly anticipated again in 2014,” spokesman Andrew March told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
