Ambitious plans to transform part of Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront into a £200,000 mini golf course have been given a boost this week.
Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported last month how Birmingham entrepreneur Paul Chatwin wants to turn a grassy area of The Esplanade into a large, purpose-built golf park to act as a tourist attraction.
His plans for the area south of the Coastguard station have been initially welcomed by Sedgemoor District Council this week, although a final decision won’t come until later in the year.
Mr Chatwin told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “The proposals have been put to the Portfolio Holder responsible for the lawns and she has ‘no objection in principle’ but the proposal has to go to public consultation.”
“Final quotations for the work have been received and the scheme will be submitted to SDC during the next month or so.”
Mr Chatwin added: “Subject to planning permission, it’s my intention to construct a high quality golf course that will attract repeat visitors and portray Burnham as a traditional, yet lively, resort.”
“It would be built of stone and brick with colours in keeping with the general surroundings. We would landscape the around it, putting in new bushes, shrubs and plants.”
“I’m inviting local residents and holidaymakers to let me know what they think of the whole idea – good or bad – and have set up a new website to explain more about the proposals.”
Town councillors gave a warm welcome to the proposals last month, with Cllr Dennis Davey calling it “a fantastic idea that would be wonderful for tourists.”
