Tarmac along part of Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront is to be replaced with a new golden-coloured surface as part of a £200,000 project.
Sedgemoor District Council is to remove the crumbling tarmac along the South Esplanade pavement between the jetty and Coastguard station in an initiative that has been welcomed by town councillors this week.
“The current surfacing is cracked and showing signs of wear and Sedgemoor intends to go out to tender to replace the surface at the end of this summer season,” explained the council’s Jo Hutchins to councillors.
Town councillors considered three colour options for the new surface at their latest meeting this week – ‘golden glow’, ‘terracotta’ and ‘grey’ – and they voted in favour of gold in a bid to brighten up the seafront for tourists.
Cllr Neville Jones said: “It’s satisfying that Sedgemoor are spending some money on our promenade. They spent £600,000 on the Bridgwater Mile so it’s high time some funding comes here.”
And Cllr Phil Harvey told Monday’s meeting: “We have a large concrete grey wall that runs along the whole length of The Esplanade – the extra colour will help to make it more attractive, though my personal preference would be terracotta.”
Cllr Chris Williams added: “Sedgemoor has £200,000 allocated to this work – we should get a golden glow.”
Cllr Paul Young remarked that the golden glow is most suitable “because it matches our beach.”
But Burnham resident Mike Young, who attended the meeting, said he was “surprised” that such a large amount of money is being spent on the work.
“I would like this to be put before the public for consultation – we residents should be allowed to give our comments rather than just the town councillors,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
It was reported last summer that cracks along the seafront were being patched up, as pictured here, before the longer-term resurfacing is implemented.
