Wildlife rescuers launched a mission to rescue a goat which was believed to be injured and trapped on steep cliffs at Brean Down, near Burnham, on Sunday (February 17th).
East Huntspill based Secret World were alerted to a goat reported to have been stranded on a ledge at Brean Down for two days.
Amid concern that it might also be injured a volunteer cliff rescue team from Bristol was called in to help.
A crowd of onlookers gathered on the beach below as the drama unfolded, as pictured here.
“As the cliff climbers abseiled down, the goat which was apparently not injured after all defied gravity by descending the near-vertical cliff face ahead of them,” said Secret World’s Graeme Thompson.
The Secret World response volunteers watched and waited until, with one final
leap, the goat landed safely at the bottom of the cliffs.
“She scampered off over the rocks at the base of the cliff to find a more gradual
ascent to rejoin the flock on the cliff top,” he added.
“The skill and professionalism of the cliff rescue team in carrying out the exercise was extremely impressive and, for them, worthwhile practice in their art. To those watching it was gratifyingly reassuring to be reminded that such dedicated and expert people are on hand should humans find themselves in a perilous situation of this kind.”
