Girls’ Football Week marked with free Highbridge coaching session

-

National Girls’ Football Week is to be marked in the Burnham-On-Sea area with a special free coaching session for local youngsters this Friday (October 9th).

The Football Association has organised Girls’ Football Week from 5-11 October to encourage more education institutions to run female-specific football sessions.

Berrow Junior Football Club in partnership with Somerset FA is holding the free coaching session for local girls in school years 3-11. The event will be held from 7-8pm at King Alfred School’s astro pitch in Highbridge on Friday October 9th.

Women’s football is the largest female team sport in the country and the third largest team sport after men’s football and cricket, says the FA.

FA women’s football national project manager Polly Fildes said: “This year has seen real change and momentum in women’s football, especially with the success of the Lionesses at this summer’s World Cup, and we wanted to build on that by extending the programme.”

“We have seen some real success stories across the country with our Women’s Football Weeks, with women not just trying, but continuing to play football, and we’re hoping for the same next month. We may even find the next generation of Lionesses.”

Dean Adams, Berrow JFC’s Development officer, added: “We are delighted to be offering this free session to encourage girls into football. We have a fantastic group of girls playing football here at Berrow, on which we would like to grow. We have several girls playing in mixed and girls teams, the Girls’ U13s team have been playing in the Somerset league are currently mid-table in their second season, showing just how far they have come in two seasons.”

The nationwide week is being delivered in partnership with Independent Schools FA, English Schools FA, Association of Colleges Sport and British Universities and Colleges Sport. In 2014, more than 2,000 people across the UK took part in the sessions across 80 institutions. More details are available on 07764 305945.
