Burnham-On-Sea gig rowing club launches new second boat

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing Club has unveiled its second boat this week.

The group has acquired a wooden gig – named ‘Shearwater’ – which enables the club to take part in races and regattas all across the south west, including the World Championships in the Isles of Scilly next May.

“This is a fantastic achievement for the club as we are just over a year old, and this time last year we didn’t have any boats,” Simon Eastham, BOS Pilot Gigs Rowing Captain, told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“The finances for the ‘Shearwater’ have come from a combination of fundraising by club members, and donations, a share offering through a ‘100 Club’, and the support of both Burnham and Highbridge Town Council and Sedgemoor District Council through generous grants.”

“All of us at BOS Pilot Gigs wish to thank everyone for their continued support and enthusiasm for what we are trying to achieve.”

“We look forward to competing in lots of racing over the next 12 months, and aim to put Burnham-On-Sea firmly on the gig rowing map.”

The club’s first gig, the ‘Jayne Campbell’, pictured below, has become a familiar sight in the waters off Burnham in recent months.
