Highbridge’s George Hotel to shut in May and may be replaced by flats

-

The George Hotel in Highbridge has been sold to developers and could be converted into flats, it has emerged this week.

Michael Robbins, the pub’s landlord, has said that the pub is set to close its doors for the final time in late May or early June.

“It’s a terrible day for me, because I’ve been here for more than 20 years, but I’m at an age when I want to retire,” said Mr Robbins.

He said he had tried hard to sell the pub as a going concern since last summer but nobody had expressed an interest.

Mike Murphy, the Chairman of Highbridge Chamber of Trade, told Burnham-On-Sea.com that a local business consortium has bought the hotel whom he believes want to re-develop the site.

He described the news as a “blow” to the town centre, particularly because he understands the pub is not listed and it therefore be more easily earmarked for development.

The hotel sale is also expected to include the tattoo studio located next door to the pub, plus an area of land behind the pub.
