Burnham-On-Sea’s MP James Heappey and former MP Tessa Munt are set to face off in a snap General Election in June after Prime Minister Theresa May’s surprise announcement today.
Calling the election on June 8th, she said Britain needs certainty, stability and strong leadership following the EU referendum. There will be a Commons vote on the proposed election on Wednesday to decide if it goes ahead.
Explaining her announcement, Mrs May said: “The country is coming together but Westminster is not.”
At the last General Election in May 2015, James Heappey won the Wells parliamentary seat – which includes the Burnham-On-Sea area – with a majority of 7,585 votes. He won for the Conservatives with 46.1% of the vote over Tessa Munt’s 32.8%.
This June’s General Election is set to be based around the Brexit negotiations. During last year’s EU referendum campaign, both James Heappey and Tessa Munt backed the campaigns to remain in the EU.
