Students at Highbridge’s King Alfred School are celebrating a superb set of impressive GCSE results today (Thursday, August 24th).
Over 200 students headed to the school to open their all-important envelopes to discover how they’d done after a year of change at the school and in the way that GCSEs are marked.
Denise Hurr, Headteacher, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “King Alfred School is very proud of the achievements of our year 11 students who have worked hard to achieve very strong results.”
“This year our students, in line with their peers nationally sat the new GCSEs in English and maths for the first time.”
“These GCSEs were graded on a numerical basis, with 9 being the top grade and 1 being the lowest grade.”
“Overall 57% of students who attended the King Alfred School achieved a Grade 4 ‘standard’ pass in English and maths GCSE.”
“We are very proud of this achievement which reflects the enormous effort put into their studies by our students, their families and our teachers.”
“There were many outstanding individual performances, these include;
– Megan Robinson Grade 9 in maths, Grade 7 in English Language, Grade 7 in English Literature, and 8 A* grades.
– Rhiana Sinclair Grade 8 maths, Grade 8 English Language, Grade 7 English Literature, 4 A*grades and 4 A grades.
– Megan Richards Grade 9 in English Language, Grade 8 in English Literature, Grade 7 in maths, 3 A* grades, 3 A grades and 2 B grades.
– Finley McDiarmid Grade 9 in English Language, Grade 7 in English Literature, Grade 8 in maths, 1 A* grade, 3 A grades, 2 B grades and a double Distinction *
– Thomas Nullmeyers Grade 9 in English Language, Grade 7 in English Literature, Grade 8 in maths, 1 A* grade, 5 A grades and 2 B grades

We spoke to several students to get their reaction to the results. Aaliyah Brown said: “It has been much harder with the new marking system, but I have done better than I thought and will be going to Bridgwater College.”
A delighted Dan Fry added: “I’ve got all A and B grades so I’m really pleased and relieved. It makes it all worth it and I’ll be heading to Bridgwater College.”
Charlie Dymon said: “I’ve done really well in the sciences and am now looking forward to going to SGS college in Filton.”
Keran Ashdown added: “I’m pleased with my results – I got what I wanted – and will be going to Bridgwater College.”
