‘Worst-ever Christmas trade’ threatens long-running Burnham shop

-

A long-running shop in the centre of Burnham-On-Sea could close after suffering its worst-ever Christmas trade.

Graham Cook, owner of GC Music in Cross Street, told Burnham-On-Sea.com he is considering shutting his shop.

“Sadly, it’s been my worst-ever year of Christmas trade, down some 40 per cent on previous years.”

Graham, who cracked a rib during a fall in the ice-covered High Street last week, added: “The dangerous state of the town centre during Christmas week definitely hurt trade.”

“Like me, many people slipped over and others were just too scared to come shopping in Burnham given the icy conditions.”

“I’m now strongly considering closing the retail shop, but keeping our sound and event business running separately.”

“Musical equipment used to be unique but now supermarkets and even some charity shops here in Burnham are selling cheap guitars and other kit.”

“Our turnover has been falling for the last six years, but the wintry weather this year has been the final straw.”
