Burnham-On-Sea’s Gary Anderson won through to the quarter final of the World Darts Championships last night (Wednesday) as he aims for a third world crown.
Gary is bidding for a third successive world championship win and went through to the PDC World Darts Championship final eight after beating Benito van de Pas 4-2 in a high class match.
Gary averaged 107.68 – the highest in the tournament so far – compared to his Dutch opponent’s 102.3. The pair also threw 20 180s in total at London’s Alexandra Palace.
Anderson said: “It was alright when I was 3-0 up but when it went to 3-1 and 3-2, I was absolutely sick and there were panic stations. All these lads can play darts nowadays.”
Earlier in the day, James Wade had said Anderson is the best player in the game if everyone brings their top darts to the table – and Anderson started off in such a fashion.
Anderson is the second favourite behind Michael Van Gerwen but said: “The standard is getting so high now and everyone can beat everyone.”
“I know the standard of players now and if you’re not on your game, you are going home.”
Gary lives in Burnham-On-Sea with his partner Rachel. He has three sons – Ryan, Joel and Tai.
Having previously worked as a builder, he and his partner Rachel previously ran the Wellington Arms pub in Rooksbridge, near Burnham, until a couple of years ago.
Gary was given a civic reception by Burnham and Highbridge’s Mayor following his 2015 triumph, his first world championship.
