Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor has praised town darts star Gary Anderson after he put up a valiant battle in the final of the World Darts Championship last night (Monday).
Gary, who lives in Burnham-On-Sea, lost 7-3 to Michael Van Gerwen in a tense final in front of a huge audience and millions of TV viewers at Alexandra Palace in London.
He was bidding to win a third consecutive title but couldn’t match the relentless high-scoring of his opponent.
Mayor Michael Clarke, pictured with his wife Mayoress Maria Clarke and Gary, told Burnham-On-Sea.com after last night’s match: “It’s been a superb accomplishment by Gary to reach the final for a third year.”
“He has done the sport and himself very proud to do so well against tough opposition. Although he didn’t win, we pass our congratulations to him on reaching the final.”
Gary praised his opponent, Van Gerwen, saying: “The year that this man has had – it’s been a walk in the park for him. It’s well deserved but I’ve had a good three years, the crowd has been fantastic, and we’ve had a good couple of weeks here.”
Monday night’s final came after Gary beat Peter Wright 6-3 on Sunday evening to reach the final for a third consecutive year but he would be denied a third world title.
Gary lives in Burnham-On-Sea with his partner Rachel. He has three sons – Ryan, Joel and Tai. Having previously worked as a builder, he and his partner Rachel previously ran the Wellington Arms pub in Rooksbridge, near Burnham, until a couple of years ago.
His final appearance came after a win over Peter Wright on Sunday evening
