Green-fingered pupils at Berrow Primary School are celebrating this week after scooping a top prize in a national fruit and vegetable growing competition.
The school pupils, who competed against ten other schools from across the country, submitted diary evidence of the vegetables they had been tasked with growing over a nine month period.
In that time, the children successfully grew everything from peas to parsnips and carrots to cress and were aptly rewarded with a cheque for £500 from the housebuilder Persimmon Homes for them to continue growing in the future and investing in their garden.
Heather Hector, head teacher at Berrow Primary School, said: “We are thrilled to have won the competition! All of the children thoroughly enjoyed getting their hands dirty and learning how to grow their own vegetables which has encouraged them to become more aware of their diet as well as where vegetables come from. It was a great competition to get involved with.”
Nicola Reed from Persimmon said: “The school was thoroughly deserved of the prize. The children had a limited area in which to grow their fruit and vegetables, yet showed creativity with their planting and achieved a superb crop at the end of the competition period. Well done all!”
