Somerset Skills and Learning will be holding a series of training sessions on garden restoration at Burnham-On-Sea’s Marine Cove gardens during July.
The taster courses will be carried out over two half days on Tuesdays between 10am-1pm (on July 5th and 19th) and on Wednesdays between 10am-1pm (July 6th and 20th).
The sessions will provide a link between Marine Cove and Somerset Skills and Learning, and the opportunity for local people to play an active part, under expert tuition, in designing a garden bedding scheme for Marine Cove.
The taster sessions are designed to encourage possible attendance on a new Royal Horticultural Society course due to commence in the Burnham office from September.
The taster sessions involve a site visit to Marine Cove from the students who will carry out research into bedding schemes and appropriate plants for the period, look at disease, and soil types.
The end result will see the students designing a planting scheme that would be appropriate to the period and style of the garden with the possibility that it will be used in the gardens.
Jacqui Strong, Marine Cove Community Gardener, (pictured) told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am pleased and excited that we may be able to work in partnership with Somerset Skills and Learning so attendees can look at Marine Cove and research the types of plants that would have been used within this location, the period of the garden and the overall style.”
“Any future course would be a great opportunity for local people but there needs to be enough interest for this to be successful so I would urge anyone with an interest in garden design/history or horticulture to get in touch with Somerset Skills and Learning now.”
“Sedgemoor are also still looking for volunteers to be involved with the Marine Cove project, especially in relation to events. We would welcome anybody coming forward if they are willing to assist with any part of the project.”
