A charitable business in Highbridge selling second-hand furniture to residents on low incomes has been praised for its work in the community by the town’s Mayor this week.
Cllr Ken Smout visited Highbridge Furniture Ltd in Morland Road where he presented the organisation, led by volunteers Kim Chatwin and Tina Gray, with a Mayor’s Community Award.
A large group of residents and supporters were present for the occasion and spoke about the value of having the shop help people in buying essential furniture.
The Mayor praised the group’s efforts and enthusiasm in creating the shop and, together with other volunteers, he said they had done well to grow the business at a time when there is so much financial hardship.
“This is localism and a community spirit in action and every avenue for funding and sponsorship is being explored to try and overcome the increasing costs of running such a venture to allow this non-profit making business to work,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“It was with great pleasure that I presented the community award to the volunteers involved in this project. I thanked them for the help they provide in the community. This is a success story and a credit to everyone involved.”
Meanwhile, the shop has announced that it will be holding a Fun Day in conjunction with Highbridge Residents Association on Saturday, 8th June from 1pm-4pm at 20-24 Morland Road featuring a raffle, face painting, cake stall, craft stalls, tombola and more.
