A £64 million injection of money into Somerset’s highways and transport infrastructure was approved by the County Council on Wednesday (February 20th), but there was disappointment that Burnham’s Frank Foley Parkway will not be completed with the funding.
County Councillors agreed their budget for the next year, which will enable improvements across the county. The projects form part of a £64 million programme over the next three years, including £47.9 million on priority improvements included in the Local Transport Plan, £12.7 million on road maintenance, £1.6 million on replacement traffic signals and £2.1 million on replacement street lighting.
In the Burnham area, the plans include the possible creation of a one-way system in Highbridge, and road safety improvements along the A38 but the half-completed Frank Foley Parkway near Burnham’s Tesco estate is not on the list of priorities.
“The Frank Foley Parkway will not be completed using this funding,” confirmed county council spokeswoman Jan Hookings to Burnham-On-Sea.com.
She added: “We have identified Burnham-On-Sea as a high priority area to improve accessibility to basic services, particularly healthcare and hospitals and we are currently working with partners such as the NHS to investigate this.”
“The Council may use some of this funding to put in place improvements arising from the accessibility study if suitable schemes are identified.”
