Fortnightly rubbish collections to be introduced in Burnham-On-Sea

-

Refuse collections in parts of Burnham-On-Sea will be reduced in frequency from weekly to fortnightly next month when a new kerbside recycling service begins.

Somerset Waste Partnership announced the changes on Monday (October 5th) to encourage residents to recycle more.

The new ‘Sort It Plus’ service will see weekly collections of food waste and recycling being introduced at the same time as less frequent collections of general refuse every two weeks.

The new service will launch in around 2,500 homes in Burnham and Brent Knoll in November and be fully rolled out to all homes next year, with the aim of doubling recycling rates across Sedgemoor.

Areas affected in Burnham include Ashcott Close, Burnham Road, Channing Close, Churchill Close, Highbridge Road, Highburn Close, Highburn Close, Maple Drive, Margaret Crescent, Marine Drive, Sycamore Close, Woodfield Close and Worston Lane.

Somerset Waste Partnership spokesman Mark Blaker told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Notification packs will be delivered to all participating households. These will be followed by new collection containers, together with full service details, which will be delivered over a three-week period before the new collections start.”

“Householders will be supplied with a food waste bin and kitchen caddy, an additional box for plastic bottles and cardboard and, where properties have been assessed to be suitable, a wheeled bin for refuse,” he added.

Residents will be able to ask questions about the scheme during two roadshows being held this month. The events will be held on on Friday 16th October from 10am to 1pm in The Princess Hall, Burnham-On-Sea and on Wednesday 14th October from 10am to 1pm at Brent Knoll Parish Hall.

As well as asking questions, residents will be able to see new collection containers. A smaller wheeled bin for refuse can be requested if it is thought the standard size bin will be too big.

Mr Blaker added: “We’re flipping waste collection on its head to add more emphasis to recycling. This scheme is already working well in other districts and feedback during the trials in Burnham has been positive.”

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last month how one Burnham couple are unhappy about the plans.
