Burnham-On-Sea football club raises £2,000 target after break-ins

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s football club has reached its target of raising £2,000 in donations to boost security at its clubhouse after being broken into three times in the last five weeks.

Burnham United AFC’s facilities in Cassis Close were initially hit by criminals before Christmas, with money taken from the fruit machine and several televisions stolen.

Following the initial break-in, the club organised fundraising activities – including an exhibition match against a local rugby team which raised more than £650.

The club was then targeted again in January when more damage was carried out to the building and the fruit machine was raided for a second time. Days later, the club was broken into for a third time, with money taken from the jukebox.

“These incidents have caused much distress, affecting all users of the club and the small group of volunteers which spend countless hours running the club,” says a club spokesman.

The Burnham club launched a Crowdfunder page here to accept donations towards the costs of upgrading its security measures. And on Wednesday evening (February 28th), the club said it had reached its £2,000 target.

“The whole club are extremely grateful to everyone who has donated,” says a club spokesman. “As we reached our original taget, we have what Crowdfunder calls a ‘stretch target’ of £3,000!”

“We never thought that we would be ever even looking to reach this when we started. So if you haven’t donated yet you can up to 7pm on March 7th.”

He added: “We are seeking to increase the security at our premises by installing security gates around our current door shutters, CCTV and security fencing around the building.”
